Highest land area by state

Land area in square miles.

This measure has no better end. The order describes the states, it does not rank them — see the other direction.

Land area from the Census Bureau's own boundary files, excluding water. A county that is half lake would otherwise read as far emptier than it is — which matters in Michigan, Minnesota and much of Alaska. Worth reading beside population rather than alone: San Bernardino County is larger than nine states, and Arlington County fits inside a small city.
