Median sale price per square foot.
This measure has no better end. The order describes the states, it does not rank them — see the other direction.
For homes sold during the period, the median of each sale price divided by its reported square footage. It helps describe the recent price density of completed sales, but it is not a quality-adjusted valuation: home size, age, property type, condition, lot, and which homes happened to sell can all make two places look different. Homes without reported square footage are excluded. The site displays the reported monthly Redfin figure.
Hawaii has the highest published sale price per sq ft in this comparison, at $659. The next states shown are District of Columbia ($471) and California ($469).
The table orders 51 states by median sale price per square foot. It describes one published measure, not an overall judgment about where to live.
