This measure has no better end. The order describes the states, it does not rank them — see the other direction.

Supermarkets and grocery stores — the places you do a weekly shop — counted as establishments, not chains: three branches of one chain count as three. A zero is a real finding rather than missing data: around 850 counties have no supermarket at all, and the count is only written where the Census reached the county under the broader retail code, which proves it was covered. Convenience stores are counted separately beside this, because a county with a filling station and no supermarket is a different place from one with three supermarkets. This counts shops inside the county line, so somewhere with none may still be ten minutes from a large store across the border.
