Every hospital certified by Medicare with an address in the county, from the CMS provider file. Zero is a real answer and is shown as zero: most rural counties have none, and their residents drive to the next county. That is the honest limit of this measure — it counts what is inside the county line, and the CMS file publishes no coordinates, so a distance to the nearest hospital cannot be derived from it. A county with none may still be twenty minutes from one. Connecticut is placed by town rather than by county: CMS still files its hospitals under the counties abolished in 2022, so none of the planning regions match by name, but every hospital carries a town and the town-to-region map built for the map itself resolves them. Where a state cannot be placed either way it is left blank rather than written as zero, which would assert an absence of hospitals rather than of data.
